Issues: Guns

As a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights, I am working in Congress to protect New Yorkers from any infringement on their right to bear arms. Law-abiding New Yorkers have a strong tradition of responsible firearm ownership for both self-defense and hunting, which is a significant part of New York State's heritage. As a federal representative, I will continue to oppose any effort that restricts access to firearms for law-abiding Americans.

To that end, I am a lead sponsor of legislation that would strengthen federal "safe passage" law to ensure law-abiding Americans traveling with firearms are not harassed or detained in states with stricter gun control laws. I support multiple additional pieces of legislation to protect the rights of gun owners, including legislation to establish a national standard for the carrying of concealed firearms, to reform the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and to ensure that the rights of gun owners are protected in bankruptcy proceedings.

I also joined 250 of my colleagues in signing a brief to the Supreme Court in favor of striking down an unconstitutional ban on handguns, and I will continue to support lawful gun owners while seeking effective ways to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.
